Coming soon: 21th SCO France Quarterly Meeting

Published on 07/05/2026
Exacerbated by global warming, air pollution is a major environmental health issue that affects everyone, in every country. In the face of this complex and invisible pollution, satellites are set to play a key role. A demonstration will take place on Thursday 18 June 2026, featuring three SCO projects at the 21st ‘SCO France Quarterly Meeting’.

Air pollution is now recognized as the leading risk factor for death worldwide. Invisible or almost invisible, it is a phenomenon that is even more complex to tackle given the two-way relationship with climate change: most sources of air pollution contribute to greenhouse gases. In this context, how can regions take action to improve air quality? Thanks to satellites!

Join us on Thursday 18 June 2026 from 10.30 am to 12 noon for the 21st SCO France Quarterly Meeting, featuring three SCO projects that are taking different approaches to measuring, characterizing and predicting air pollution using satellite data.

The event will be held as a Teams webinar: registration is required to obtain your login link and receive the invitation in your calendar.

The day's programme

  • Preamble: introduction by Sébastien PAYAN, director of the AERIS national cluster, who will present one of the five national clusters of the Data Terra research infrastructure, dedicated to atmospheric data and services.

  • FLORIA: This project aims to characterize and monitor concentrations of PM10 particles, which are a key indicator of air pollution. After 12 months of work, it has led to the commercialization of the FLORIA solution, which has become an operational service capable of producing maps of PM10concentrations across Europe – a particularly effective solution for providing data on areas with few or no in-situ monitoring stations.
💡 FLORIA, or how to read the air we breathe – 21 April 2026

  • AirCrowd: Taking a participatory approach, this project aims to develop an innovative, low-cost solution for measuring air quality in urban areas by combining satellite data with ground-based data from a network of open-source, on-site-built (FabLAB) and repairable micro-stations. Also planning to observe the impact of ambient air quality on residents’ health, the demonstrator is being implemented in Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur with the ultimate aim of applying the solution to countries in the Global South.

  • EDISON: After 24 months of work, EDISON is launching the GEMS service, which provides an improved and operational inventory of greenhouse gas and pollutant emissions using Sentinel data. Via a dynamic mapping interface, the tool enables local authorities to identify hotspots, track emissions by sector of activity, and even generate forecasts for NO₂ and PM₂.₅.
