Coming soon: the 23rd Quarterly Meeting of SCO France

Published on 04/11/2026
Essential to life, water has become a major issue. As a result of climate change, it is becoming too abundant in some places and too scarce in others, to the point of becoming a source of conflict. Join us on Thursday 3 December 2026 for the 23rd ‘SCO France Quarterly Meeting’, featuring three SCO projects that, thanks to satellites, are tackling various water-related challenges.

Depending on its availability and quality, water influences terrestrial ecosystems. Conversely, vegetation and living organisms alter the water cycle. This is known as eco-hydrology. However, current climate change is disrupting these interrelated dynamics, even as human demand for water increases: in this context, how can we anticipate the major challenges relating to water resources?

Join us on Thursday 3 December 2026 from 10.30 am to 12 noon for the 23rd SCO France Quarterly Meeting, featuring three SCO projects that use satellite data to model catchment areas, monitor interactions between livestock and wildlife, and track tropical rainfall.

The event will be held as a Teams webinar: registration is required to receive your login link and have the event added to your calendar.

The day’s programme

  • CAHYSPA: In Central Asia, approximately 80% of the decline in the flow of the Syr Darya River over the last 80 years is attributable to increased irrigation, and 20% to the warming observed during this period. In this context, CAHYSPA is producing hydrological data on the Syr Darya’ s catchment area, which will feed into a monitoring platform based on remote sensing and hydrological and hydrodynamic models. Given the challenges of transboundary river management, the project is being developed in close collaboration with local partners.

  • Earth-WISE: In southern Africa, water is the main factor influencing the movement of wildlife, livestock and their potential interactions. Earth-WISE is developing a platform for the operational monitoring of water bodies using satellite imagery, enabling the simulation of the impact of climate change on these animal interactions and the associated risk of pathogen transmission.

  • PrEMHyOM: Developed in West and Central Africa, PrEMHyOM aims to provide bespoke rainfall data in intertropical basins, where information is lacking even though rainfall variability has a significant influence on catchment areas. Based on satellite data and other information from telecoms networks, a platform will improve hydrological analysis of these basins and provide high-resolution maps for urban areas.
