"Innovative services for resilient farming practices", soon to be the 11th Quarterly Meeting of the SCO France

Published on 16/11/2023
Both a source and a sink of carbon, agriculture has no choice but to adapt to the impacts of climate change. On Friday 15 December 2023, tune in to the eleventh "SCO France Quarterly Meeting" to discover three SCOlutions using satellite data to help transform farming practices.

Food, regional planning, preservation of the environment and biodiversity, development of economic activity in rural areas... Agriculture is a particularly strategic sector, at the crossroads of many issues.

All over the world, farmers are having to adapt to new climatic conditions, while at the same time doing everything they can to combat this major disruption and its impact.

On Friday 15 December 2023 from 10.30 am to 12 noon, take part in the eleventh quarterly meeting of the Space for Climate Observatory and discover three SCOlutions that use space data to support the transformation of agricultural practices.

The day's programme

  • SCO Frichesagricoles: In the Occitania region (France), the development of agricultural wasteland is a major concern for elected representatives wishing to take action to ensure food sovereignty, in a context where the risk of fire and health problems continue to increase. The aim of this project is to map agricultural wasteland and support initiatives to redevelop these areas while respecting their multifunctionality.

  • IRRISAT-MOROCCO: This project is setting up a system to help optimize irrigation water using satellite data. It is based on two complementary approaches to estimating plant water consumption and requirements, which will be combined to provide results at the level of the agricultural plot, the irrigated sector and the catchment area.

  • QUANTICA: The aim of this project is to develop a tool combining plant-soil models and remote sensing to quantify, at plot level, the additional carbon storage induced by intermediate crops, with a view to providing fairer remuneration for farmers who adopt these practices. The tool is being co-constructed with players in the agricultural chain and tested in Occitania (France) to prototype future services.
