Satellites serving French Guiana

Published on 05/10/2026
As the home of the Guiana Space Centre (CSG), French Guiana holds a special place in the hearts of the French and European space communities. In this Amazonian region, where climate challenges are numerous, the SCO is joining forces with CNES/CSG to support local stakeholders in a multifaceted adaptation process. Featuring discussions, action plans and collaborations, the seminar ‘Satellites serving French Guiana’, held in September, proved particularly fruitful.

The Climate Change Adaptation Days in 2025, followed by the webinar “Tropical SCOlutions” in June 2026, marked the beginning of a story that we hope will accelerate adaptation to climate change in French Guiana.

Indeed, from 21 to 25 September 2026, the CSG’s Space for French Guiana department brought together technical experts from CNES Toulouse and local stakeholders for a five-day seminar. The aim was to provide a forum for discussion and reflection on the priority issues to which satellite solutions can offer concrete answers for the region.

Packed with conferences and themed workshops facilitated by the SCO, the week yielded a wealth of proposals. Certain SCO projects particularly caught the attention of local stakeholders, such as Chove-Chuva, TropiSCO, OpHySE, Arbocarto and Mangroves.

The public conference at the University of French Guiana was also incredibly lively, with a barrage of questions from the 80-strong audience over the course of two hours, demonstrating a growing awareness that space technology can offer powerful and useful tools.

Action-Reaction: a dedicated webinar for the SCO call for projects

Water, urban adaptation, coastal dynamics, forests, agriculture, health, biodiversity… Many of the identified initiatives fall within the SCO’s scope of action.

👉 Without delay, SCO France is organizing an information webinar on Thursday 8 October at 3.00 pm – 10.00 am French Guiana time – on the current call for projects to encourage potential applicants to submit an application.

A Charter of Commitment to take action

To conclude the seminar, CNES drafted a Charter of Commitment to work hand in hand to implement the identified actions.

► The Charter was signed by the presidents or representatives of the Guiana Space Centre (CSG), the Territorial Collectivity of French Guiana (CTG), the Association of Mayors of French Guiana, the Academy of French Guiana, the University of French Guiana, the Regional Health Agency (ARS) of French Guiana and the Prefecture of French Guiana. © 2026 ESA-CNES\Optique Vidéo du CSG - S MARTIN
